Thirteen

In the end, I made the call.

I liked Antonio, but the dark and dashing demon intimidated me, too. Still, there was no way I could ignore the opportunity, not if it meant there might be a way to bring Gideon back to me.

Though it was after nine at night, I drove toward my coffee shop where Antonio had agreed to meet me. It had seemed the best place since it would be awkward to invite him to my house late at night without Gideon being there. Also, it was too cold to meet outside, and I didn’t want to risk being overheard in a public place.

Most of the shops on Main Street had closed hours ago like mine, so I found it interesting that the lights were still on at Bewitched Books. I slowed as I passed, and I peered in through the large picture window like the one at Meowkins.

When I spotted Marina and Vivian of all people standing just inside, it took everything I had not to slam on the brakes. I did, however, drive around the corner and park on a side street. There was no way I would miss an opportunity to spy on them.

I tightened my coat around me and stepped out into the brisk November air. One nice perk about getting older was that I felt less inclined to wear heels to impress others, so sneaking close to the building was not only easier, but quieter. Bonus points for me because my coat was black and would blend into the night.

I walked slowly with my head down, using the trees along the street as cover when I could, hoping that it would be less likely that my movements would draw attention. Not that there was anyone around to see me.

When I reached the large oak nearest Bewitched Books, I stopped and peered around the trunk. My view from this vantage point was much clearer. I’d expected to find the two witches embroiled in a heated discussion at the least, but their expressions appeared calm and their bodies relaxed.

I’d have given anything to have Gideon’s senses so that I might hear what they said. I watched for several moments until Marina waved a hand as though asking Vivian to follow her. The two turned toward the back of the store and disappeared.

I was debating on whether I should walk closer to the window when the bright lights of an oncoming car illuminated the street. I glanced at the passing silver BMW, and the brake lights flared red.

I cursed my luck when I realized it was Antonio’s car, and worse, he’d spotted me.

With panic spurting in my heart, I rushed from my sad excuse of a hiding place and hurried down the street until I was even with his car.

He leaned his head forward, glancing through the passenger window, with his brows raised. He lowered the window. “Everything okay, Daisy?”

He spoke loud enough that I could have heard him from down the block. I cringed and waved my hands in front of me to dismiss his fears.
